Jengai, Aidnn, Zalos and I had a little chat on AIM tonight, and we bounced some ideas off of each other. I'll sum them up, and allow them (and anyone else) to provide feedback.
Dues - A small amount ($5) would be charged to everyone joining the group. It wouldn't be assessed until a month or so after your first fight. The money thusly collected would be used to purchase SH equipment such as community weapons, open-sided tents, rope, fresh fruit and Gatorade, and anything else we want. Everyone is required to pay dues, as we all benefit from the use of SH community equipment.
Rental - After a certain time period, you are required to either provide your own weapon or rent weapons from us. $1 to use the community pile for the day, or $5 for the month (at least 8 practices). This time period would either be a set number of practices (you use community weapons for free for four practices) or a calender-based period (one month).
YBIYBI - You Break It, You Buy It. If a community weapon is in your care, and it breaks (other than normal wear and tear), you are required to purchase it from the community arsenal. A price schedule will be drawn up for weapons, and the prices will go down as a weapon ages.
Weapon Sales - You aren't required to wait until you've broken one; you can purchase a weapon from the community armory at any time. The prices would be the same as for the YBIYBI policy, which is a far sight better than any of those online weapons merchants, and we can guarantee the quality.
Fundraisers - This was not explored, merely mentioned. I'll cover my ideas in the next post.

Dues vs Rental
You're a new fighter. You have a friend who fights, or you saw the article, or you were just walking by. At your first two practices, you learn the basic weapons (Blue, Dagger, Rock, Shield). At your next two, you are shown how to fight safely with more advanced stuff (Reds, Polearms, Javelins). And we provide all of these for you to try, free!
At your fifth practice, you are required to have garb (at least make an attempt) and arm yourself. You can do this by making a weapon, purchasing it from the Realm, or using the community weapons. You can access the Stormhaven armory by either paying dues or renting the weapons. I would put just one into effect, not both.
I like the idea of having a Stormhaven treasury, which will be used for long-term items Stormhaven uses. Open-sided tents for weapons check, equipment storage at events, or just plain shade on a hot day. Fresh fruit and Gatorade to keep our fighters hydrated and energized during practice. Fruit is cheap, and fighters don't leave the field because they're hungry. Rope for bridge battles, cave battles, town battles, siege battles, or just plain Edge of the World.
DUES - A stable amount of money; it's not dependent upon people renting from us instead of making their own.
RENTAL - Dagorhir is very cheap to participate in, but your start-up costs can sometimes be daunting, especially if you're a poor college student. Adding $5 to the cost of getting into the game might deter a few people.

YBIYBI/Weapon Sales
An sample price schedule:
Weapon Class: New Price/6-12 Months/Over 1 Year
Blue Sword: $10/$8/$6 Red Sword: $15/$13/$10 Dagger: $5/$4/$2 Small Shield: $20/$15/$10

Fundraisers
Before we become a BSU Club...
Host an LBTL Monthly Battle. $2 or $3 entry fee. Run some awesome battles, including some very original RP stuff. Put our names firmly on the map, and grab a reputation as great event organizers. Put the money in the bank, and work from there.
Once we become a BSU Club...
We attach ourselves to another event; something that's going to draw crowds. Then we run pit fighting or small, controlled free-for-alls, and we charge people to fight.
If we could get away with it, I'd say let them pay $1 to pick up a sword and start on the field. Three or four at a time. Winner takes $2, we keep the change. Run a bunch of these all night.
If we couldn't do that (it borders on gambling), we could try to solicit coupons from local restaurants and shops. Maybe 10% off at the Wizard's Keep or a free hot dog from Carter's. Get a bunch of prizes together, and let people fight for them. Not as attractive as the chance to win money, but we make a bigger profit and don't violate any rules.
Run a raffle. We can acquire some coupons or freebies like above, but we can also purchase some things ahead of time, and the proceeds would pay for them. Gift certificates, for example. Maybe Carter would give us 20 $1 gift certificates for $15. Or the Keep (since those interested in Dagorhir are likely to game).

I think both have thier strengths and weaknesses. What if we did both. In that case you would ask, what is the advantage of being a member.
We could think of a few, here is a couple.
1. You get into our events at a discounted price for being a member. 2. You get a discounted price on rentals after your trial period is up. *Keeping track of people and thier trial periods would prolly be assigned to the person running the practice. The list could be an excel sheet that we keep online and could be printed before a practice before whoever runs it, runs it. 3. Once you have your own/weapons and garb you may use the community chest for free if your a member (well, paid the dues). 4. For YBIYBI you have the option of making a weapon of the same class of at least equal quality yourself to pay for the broken weapon rather than paying for it out right.
-Just an idea

A discounted rate is a great idea we've thought of in the past, but how often are we going to have events at which we charge an entry fee?
What I think I'm reading is...if you're a member, you pay a discounted rate to use the rental weapons (how far do we discount $1?), but if you build your own, you can use them for free?
Having someone build weapons in place of community weapons is good because that's less work for the Armorer, but we can't always guarantee the quality of a weapon right off. You can look to make sure it appears good, but we won't be able to tell if the quality beneath the surface is still the same. Also, the price we charge is above the cost of building the weapon, and we bank that extra dough for future community equipment, so we lose a little there. I don't have a problem with the idea, if we only apply it in special cases. If someone has been doing this for a year or two and has built weapons, and we've seen them last, that's an option we could offer. Of course, it's rare that someone like that will be using a community weapon instead of their own.
