Stormhaven currently uses three "House Rules" that differ from the Dagorhir Manual of Arms: 1. Weapon Covers - Covers may only be a neutral color (black, white, grey, brown, et cetera) or the color of the weapon. So no red covers on Blue weapons or blue covers on Spears. A Blue or Red weapon may be covered with green fabric if it passes as Green as well. 2. Black Weapons - Throwing axes, throwing knives, et cetera may be used. They must be crafted entirely of foam, and are only legal when thrown. They do Blue damage to the torso and limbs, and White damage to the head. 3. Green Through Leather - Double Green already passes through all armor, but we allow Single Green strikes to pass through leather armor only. This gives a benefit to those bearing the extra weight of metal armor. For cross-breed armor, such as ringmail or brigandine, the Head Weapons Checker will determine whether armor is considered leather or metal.

There is a suggestion on the National Forum that changes thrown weapons to Green damage, which would lessen their power against armor (though in Stormhaven, they would still go through leather armor). I think we should leave the rule as is until we get some out here and playtest them. Then, if we think Black weapons are overpowered, we can do something about it.

I'd like to add a fourth rule:
4. New Fighter Weapon Restrictions - At a fighter's first practice, he will be taught the basics of Single Blue before he is allowed on the field. For his first two practices, he will be limited in his use of weapons. He may not use Reds, Spears, or Yellow Weapons, and he may not use two Blue weapons. This is for everyone's safety.

I like the idea of introducing new players with a single blue, it makes sense to let them develop and advance into their own style. I think that this should also be handled carefully with the new recruits so that they don't feel extremely disadvantaged or limited during practice or play.

For the chosing of weapons, I think that both restricted blues and letting-them-choose both has it's advantages. Yes, learning the footwork is important, but some people can learn it from using other weapons. If it is a safty concern, then I can see more backing. If it's just a training issue, they should be allowed to use whatever is fun for them. This is a game after all.

It is safety. We the leaders aren't going to force you to fight a certain way or practice so you get better; this is a game and we're all here to have fun. But it's not safe to hand a new fighter a Red weapon and have him go to town on everyone's heads. The same with spears and missile weapons. Just ask Thorand, Aidnn, and Raban how well they threw javelins at their first real event. Alric
